In the past, the trend has been to use probiotics for digestion problems. However, the difficulty is that if the internal environment hasn’t changed, probiotics will be killed off just as the original friendly bacteria were.

Using prebiotics such as Molkosan® to improve the internal environment of the gut increases the likelihood that a probiotic supplement will work well.

The origins of Molkosan®

Whey is a by-product of cheese production and has a long history of use in healthcare going as far back as the time of Hippocrates (400 B.C.).

In the 18th Century, whey enjoyed a renaissance, securing an enviable reputation and becoming popular with visitors to health resorts such as those in Gais, Switzerland, which was frequented by European royalty. As far back as 400 BC Hippocrates recommended whey to his patients as a health tonic. In ancient Greece it was recommended to improve digestion, purify blood, protect against poisoning, and for skin problems.

During the 1700’s and 1800’s, whey cure establishments flourished in Europe, and royalty and commoners alike converged on these ‘spa’s’ seeking whey’s curative properties for a myriad conditions ranging from low blood sugar to eczema.

Appenzell

The story goes that a farmer had been busy making cheese and as he was feeding the whey to his pigs, some of it spilled into his boots.  This poor man suffered from recurring fungal infections between his toes and on the soles of his feet and as the whey touched the affected skin he felt a tingling sensation.  That night he noticed his skin looked slightly better, so he decided to apply whey to his feet every day.

It wasn’t long before his problem was solved.  His neighbour’s daughter suffered from eczema and to her delight she also found that application of whey gave excellent results.  The news quickly spread through their small community and then on through Switzerland and the rest of Western Europe. Desperate people converged on Apenzell in search of the whey cure.

Guesthouses had to be built to accommodate the visitors and because drinking a glass of whey three times a day was part of the treatment programme, special bells were installed on the roof of each guesthouse. When your guesthouse’s bell rang, it signalled it was time for your glass of whey. If you visit Appenzell today you will still see the bells there.

The renowned Swiss naturopath Dr Alfred Vogel, who lived about 15km from Appenzell heard about the whey cure. He was greatly impressed by this sharp, refreshing drink and wrote about it repeatedly throughout his life.

When he studied the Apennzeller whey, Vogel observed its numerous curative and beneficial health properties. He formulated a four times concentrated form of the whey so that people who could not visit Appenzell to drink it fresh could still enjoy its benefits.  This was the beginning of Molkosan. Vogel prescribed it for skin problems, indigestion, sore throats, laryngitis, diabetes and as a pancreas tonic. Today it is used by people in more than 23 countries to improve their health. 

Good health begins in the gut

As they say in China, ‘The root of all good health lies in the gut.’ The digestive system is also home to 70% of the body’s immune cells. A poor diet and regular use of medications such as antibiotics, cortisone and hormones cause a high level of toxicity in the gut. This results in an imbalance between the good and the bad flora or gut bacteria, which we call dysbiosis.

There are at least 150 different species of gut bacteria that exist in the human digestive system. These bacteria should live in a state of balance with each other. Making sure you have adequate levels of friendly bacteria in your gut is important, not only for promoting digestion, but also for improving other aspects of your health. For example, friendly bacteria bind to cholesterol and carry it out through your gut. They also create an acidic environment in the large intestine, which is particularly beneficial for those suffering from constipation, as they encourage the regular evacuation of your bowels. Dysbiosis occurs when organisms such as Candida albicans and unfriendly bacteria, start to overpopulate the gut if not kept in balance by sufficient quantities of other, friendly bacteria and yeast.

Once candida albicans become dominant, they can cause unpleasant symptoms such as those associated with flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), sugar cravings, fatigue, muscle weakness and intolerance of certain foods. Molkosan stops Candida Albicans from attaching to the walls of the gut so that the body can eliminate the infections.

How does Molkosan® work?

It creates a good environment in the gut, in which the friendly bacteria can flourish thus promoting better digestion and improving metabolism and vitality.

  • Molkosan® is rich in beneficial L(+)-lactic acid, which is essential in preparing the digestive system for processing the food we eat. L(+)-lactic acid gives the body energy, supports the digestive system and keeps the body’s gut flora in balance.
  • L(+)-lactic acid also helps the small intestine to absorb minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper.
  • Molkosan® is beneficial for people with lactose intolerance, because the L(+)-lactic acid helps to break down the protein and lactose in milk.

How do I take Molkosan®?

Molkosan® is concentrated and needs to be diluted to make a drink:

  • Molkosan® Drink: Add 2 teaspoons to a glass of mineral water for a refreshing drink
  • Molkosan® Fruit Drink: Add 2 teaspoons to half a glass of apple juice. Top up with mineral water
  • Molkosan® Fruit Smoothie: Mash fresh fruit in a blender, add 1 tablespoon of Molkosan® and fill with mineral water
  • Molkosan® Fruit Tea: Prepare a fruit tea of your choice with honey and add 2 teaspoons of Molkosan®. Drink warm or with ice

Molkosan® Original is available in 200ml and 500ml. It can be used by adults and children over the age of 2 years.

After opening, store in the fridge where Molkosan® will keep for up to 6 months.

FAQ Molkosan®

1. Who can't take Molkosan®?

Molkosan® is free from genetically modified organisms or ingredients, milk protein, yeast, gluten, preservatives, flavour enhancers, sugar substitutes and sweeteners. It is also fat and sugar free.

2. How long can I use Molkosan® for?

You can take Molkosan® for as long as necessary. A month's course is recommended initially. It can be taken on an ongoing basis if needed, or another course can be taken after a while to maintain improvements.

3. Can you take Molkosan® with other medications?

Yes.

4. Can Molkosan® be taken by children?

Children under the age of six with digestive problems should be taken to a doctor or another healthcare professional. Children over the age of six may well benefit from a course of Molkosan® .

5. Can I take Molkosan® whilst pregnant or breast-feeding?

This is not recommended unless directed by a healthcare professional.

6. What is L+ lactic acid?

L+ lactic acid is the substance produced by lactic acid bacteria in the human gut. L+ keeps the acidity of your gut at the right level and acts as a prebiotic by allowing good gut bacteria to thrive, encouraging their growth.

The better your levels of L+, the better able you will be to support a healthy population of good gut bacteria, which in turn promotes efficient digestion. Unfriendly bacteria don't like L+ and can’t survive in a gut full of healthy, L+ supported good bacteria.
